Strict control of capital movements and clipping of around 30 per cent of all deposits of 100,000 Euros (£85,000) and more in the country’s two largest banks: key features of the bail-out “rescue” for Cyprus.

Yesterday Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch finance minister who as head of the Eurogroup played a key role in the Cyprus negotiations, said the deal represented a new template for resolving future Euro zone banking problems.  Markets across Europe tumbled on concern that deposits in other troubled Euro zone banks could be at risk.

UK membership of the Euro was strongly advocated by prominent political figures: they said it would be good for our economy and They Knew Best. Here, after the latest Euro debacle, we carry their statements of apology and contrition for their deeply flawed advice:
